The Cartographer of the Sleeping City

Every night a mapmaker redrew streets from citizens' dreams until the city asked to remain uncertain.

Original fiction · Dream Noir Guide

Iven's maps updated at midnight: alleys stretched toward worries, parks gathered around relief, and bridges appeared wherever two strangers dreamed alike.

01

Perfect navigation

The council used the maps to predict crowds and remove every surprising turn. Soon nobody got lost, but nobody discovered a new shop, friend, or view.

Iven noticed that erased paths continued faintly beneath the official ink.

02

The blank district

One night an entire quarter appeared white. Residents had agreed to stop reporting dreams so their unplanned lives could not be optimized.

Iven entered the blank space and found gardens, arguments, shortcuts, and mistakes that no map could responsibly fix.

03

A map with breathing room

He replaced predictions with optional routes and marked uncertain places honestly. The council complained until citizens chose the new edition.

The city became harder to control and easier to inhabit; every map ended with a blank square labelled yours to notice.

Guidance is most humane when it leaves room for choice, privacy, and discovery.
