The Market of Unspoken Apologies

Once a year, merchants sold perfect apologies to people who wanted forgiveness without facing what they had done.

Original fiction · Dream Noir Guide

Each apology came wrapped in paper that changed colour to match the listener's favourite memory.

01

A flawless purchase

Dev bought a sentence for the friend whose work he had publicly taken credit for. The merchant guaranteed tears, reunion, and no uncomfortable questions.

When he rehearsed it, every word sounded beautiful and none named the stolen work.

02

The stall without a sign

An old seller offered only blank paper. She asked Dev to write what he did, who benefited, what repair was possible, and what response he was not entitled to demand.

The page resisted every excuse but accepted uncertainty.

03

No guaranteed ending

His friend listened, requested public correction, and declined immediate reconciliation. Dev made the correction anyway.

The colourful market vanished by morning. The blank paper remained, carrying an apology that had not bought forgiveness but had begun repair.

A real apology names harm and accepts that forgiveness cannot be purchased or required.
