The Museum of Borrowed Shadows

Visitors could try on another life for one minute, but one shadow refused to be returned.

Original fiction · Dream Noir Guide

The museum promised empathy: stand in the light, borrow a recorded shadow, and feel a carefully edited minute from someone else's day.

01

The popular exhibit

People queued for heroic shadows and avoided ordinary ones labelled Night Shift, Hospital Corridor, and Waiting for News.

Curator Meera noticed visitors praising themselves for understanding lives whose discomfort ended when the timer chimed.

02

The shadow that stayed

A shadow from a displaced seamstress clung to a minister after the exhibit. It did not frighten him; it repeated unfinished paperwork and inaccessible offices.

Meera found that the donor had withdrawn consent months earlier. The museum had kept the exhibit because it attracted funding.

03

Returning more than a shadow

The museum closed, contacted contributors, removed unapproved records, and paid what contracts had hidden.

When it reopened, no one could wear another person's life. Visitors listened to accounts chosen by their tellers and left with practical actions, not borrowed innocence.

Empathy without consent can become possession; listening must leave ownership with the teller.
