The River That Returned Names

A river carried forgotten names back to shore, but each could be claimed only through a true story.

Original fiction · Dream Noir Guide

After every flood, smooth black stones appeared on the bank with names written in silver.

01

The easy claims

People collected famous names and invented grand ancestors, hoping the stones would make their families important.

By sunset the false stones dissolved into ordinary mud, leaving only the small names nobody recognised.

02

One kitchen memory

Nadi found the name Sela and remembered an old neighbour who had fed travellers without asking their rank. He told that modest story beside the water.

The stone warmed, and three elders added details that had nearly disappeared with them.

03

The archive above the floodline

The village stopped treating names as prizes and built shelves for stories, sources, and disagreements.

When the river rose again, it returned fewer stones because more names already had a place among the living.

A name is preserved by accountable memory, not by possession.
