The Riverboat for Unfinished Letters

A boat carried unsent letters downstream, but only those with honest endings could reach the person named.

Original fiction · Dream Noir Guide

Every cabin contained a desk, one sheet of paper, and a window showing a conversation the passenger had avoided.

01

The perfect explanation

Arun wrote twelve pages to his father explaining every silence. The river kept circling the same bend because the letter ended with a demand for immediate understanding.

Other passengers added poetry, blame, or jokes, but the shore never moved closer.

02

The sentence without control

The captain said a finished letter must state what the writer would do and leave the reader's response free.

Arun shortened his pages to an apology, a boundary, and an offer to speak when both were ready.

03

Two possible deliveries

At dawn the boat reached a fork. One branch led to his father's door; the other returned the letter to Arun if sending would be unsafe.

He chose ordinary post after asking a trusted person to read it. The river disappeared, having taught him that courage includes method and consent.

Honest communication names your action while leaving another person's response outside your control.
