The Winter House Without Shadows

A family removed every shadow from their home and discovered that brightness can hide as effectively as darkness.

Original fiction · Dream Noir Guide

The lamps in Fara House shone from every wall, leaving no corner where grief could sit unseen.

01

A cheerful rule

After their grandfather died, the family banned dim rooms and answered every question with a bright memory.

Young Omi noticed that photographs had lost depth and faces looked pasted onto the paper.

02

The shadow in the snow

Outside, moonlight cast one long shadow from the chimney. Omi followed it to a box of unfinished letters the adults had hidden.

They read anger, gratitude, and fear that did not fit the home's compulsory cheerfulness.

03

Light with direction

The family turned off half the lamps and let morning move naturally through the rooms. Shadows returned beside every solid thing.

They kept telling happy stories, but no longer used them to erase the difficult ones that gave the memories depth.

Honest hope can share a room with grief; it does not need to bleach every shadow.
